Homemade Elderberry Syrup: Wellness Made Simple

Hi friends!

As a mom of two and owner of The Pink Flamingo Play Cafe, I’m always looking for ways to keep my family healthy and happy, especially during those cooler months when colds and sniffles seem to be everywhere. Elderberry syrup is one of my favorite natural remedies, and I’m so excited to share this recipe with you. It’s easy to make, super effective, and packed with goodness that supports the whole family’s wellness.

Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups fresh elderberries)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-4 whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated or sliced
  • 1 cup raw honey (adjust to taste)
  • Mason jars for storage

Instructions:

  1. Simmer the ingredients: In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the elderberries, water, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 30-45 minutes until the liquid is reduced by about half. I personally love how the aroma fills my kitchen!
  2. Strain the mixture: Remove the pan from heat and let it cool slightly. Use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the mixture into a bowl, pressing the berries to extract all the juice. Discard the solids.
  3. Sweeten the syrup: Once the liquid has cooled to lukewarm (not hot), stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved. This step always reminds me of God’s sweetness in providing natural remedies for us.
  4. Store: Transfer the syrup into a clean, airtight glass jar or bottle. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Dosage:

  • Adults: 1 tablespoon daily for immune support
  • Children: 1 teaspoon daily (for children over 1 year old, as honey isn’t safe for infants)
